Tree-lined character homes between Downtown, Western University and the Thames River.
Old North is one of London’s most established and prestigious neighbourhoods, located between Downtown London and Western University. Known for its mature tree-lined streets, historic architecture and strong residential character, the area has long attracted families, university faculty, doctors, lawyers and other professionals seeking a central location with distinctive homes.
Housing in Old North is exceptionally diverse. The neighbourhood includes Victorian and Edwardian houses, traditional brick homes, large luxury residences, impressive estate properties and a number of grand historic homes. Many have been extensively renovated while preserving their original character, while others remain largely original and offer a glimpse into London’s architectural history.
Old North also contains smaller detached homes, duplexes, triplexes, converted multi-family dwellings, apartment buildings and selected condominium and infill developments. Some streets, particularly those closer to Western University and within the Broughdale area, have a greater concentration of student rentals. Other sections are dominated by high-end single-family homes and quiet residential streets.
The broader Old North area includes the St. George-Grosvenor, Bishop Hellmuth and Broughdale neighbourhoods. Bishop Hellmuth is a designated Heritage Conservation District known for its consistent collection of Queen Anne Revival homes, many of which were constructed between 1895 and 1910.
Residents have convenient access to Western University, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Richmond Row and Downtown London. Gibbons Park, Doidge Park, the Thames River and the Thames Valley Parkway provide nearby green space, recreation and walking and cycling routes.
Property styles and values can differ considerably from one street to another. Overall, Old North is generally positioned toward the higher end of London’s central housing market, particularly for renovated character homes, substantial lots and larger luxury properties. Its architecture, mature surroundings and proximity to major institutions make it one of London’s most distinctive residential areas.
