Wortley Village is the commercial and cultural heart of Old South, one of London’s most distinctive and cherished central neighbourhoods. Although the names are often used interchangeably, Wortley Village generally refers to the walkable business district along Wortley Road, while Old South extends across the surrounding residential community.
The neighbourhood is known for its mature tree-lined streets, historic architecture and strong village atmosphere. Wortley Road is lined with independent restaurants, cafés, bakeries, shops, professional services and local businesses, giving residents access to many everyday conveniences within the community.
Housing is exceptionally varied, ranging from modest cottages and smaller brick homes to substantial Victorian and Edwardian residences with wide porches, detailed woodwork, stained glass and other original architectural features. Notable community landmarks include the historic Normal School and its surrounding green space, the Landon Branch Library and the Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church. Thames Park provides access to the Thames River, recreational facilities and the Thames Valley Parkway, while several smaller parks are located throughout Old South.
In 2013, Old South and Wortley Village received both the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award for Great Neighbourhood in the Canadian Institute of Planners’ Great Places in Canada competition. Its architecture, independent businesses, walkable setting and strong community identity continue to make Wortley Village one of London’s most recognizable and sought-after neighbourhoods.
